Sarah Grewal - Principal Lawyer/Founder

Sarah is a criminal defence lawyer whose legal practice spans the province, where she represents clients at all levels of B.C. courts. Sarah also offers services in family law and refugee claims. 

Sarah obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UBC, and a Juris Doctor from UBC’s Allard School of Law. Sarah Grewal held a leadership role for various organizations while in law school. Sarah is also a member of the Surrey Bar Association, Trial Lawyers of British Columbia, and the South Asian Bar Association.

Throughout her career, Sarah has achieved numerous successful outcomes. She has obtained multiple stays of proceedings for criminal charges and secured favourable orders in family law disputes.

Sarah is a seasoned courtroom litigator. She has conducted various criminal trials, sentencing hearings, and bail hearings. Sarah has also defended her clients’ rights pursuant to the Canadian Charter of Rights and has obtained stays of proceedings in cases where it was ultimately found that the police breached her clients’ Charter rights. Her skills and diligence have also led her to junior on various murder files, further highlighting her ability to handle complex cases.

Here are some of Sarah’s notable results:

  • Got a result of a manslaughter conviction after a multi-week 2nd-degree murder trial, was able to negate the intent for murder. On sentencing, achieved a sentence of 6 years, whereas the crown was seeking a 12-year sentence.
  • For a 2nd-degree murder sentencing, achieved a sentence of 13 years parole eligibility whereas the crown was seeking a parole eligibility period of 15–18 years.
  • Got evidence excluded for drug trafficking matters by establishing charter rights violations such as unlawful searches, unlawful arrests, unlawful strip searches, and improper search warrants.
  • Achieved a sentence of no jail time for possession of a loaded and unlicensed firearm, whereas Crown was seeking a 3-year jail sentence.
  • Avoided deportation for foreign nationals and permanent residents by pitching sentences that didn’t engage immigration consequences. For example, received a conditional discharge for an assault causing bodily harm and relied on the collateral immigration consequences as a factor to consider for the court.
  • Received acquittals for various trials, including for serious cases such as sexual assault.
  • Received multiple stays of proceedings.

Sophie Saran - Associate Lawyer

Sophie practices in the areas of criminal defence, family, and immigration law. Sophie has extensive court experience in the B.C. provincial and supreme courts. She takes on cases throughout British Columbia.

Sophie completed her bachelor’s in psychology at the University of British Columbia in 2015. She completed her Juris Doctor at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law in 2021. At UVic Law, she participated in The Law Centre providing advice, assistance, and representation to individuals that qualified for the representation. During her time at the Law Centre, she worked in the areas of criminal defence, civil litigation, family law, and residential disputes. 

Sophie articled at a criminal defence firm located in the Fraser Valley, where she gained experience in drug trafficking cases, violent offences, and sexual assault cases. She also defended clients whose Charter rights were infringed by the state. Her work contributed to multiple acquittals and stays of proceedings. Sophie also worked on appeals during her articles.

 Sophie is fluent in Punjabi, Hindi, and Spanish.

 Ms. Saran’s representative cases include:

  • Conditional sentence order for fraud charges in excess of $300,000.
  • An acquittal for a residential break and enter and 6 counts of assault.
  • Obtained refugee status for several individuals.
  • Achieved multiple stays of proceedings.
  • Obtained an increase in spousal support payments several years after the initial settlement
  • Helped multiple clients achieve sole Guardianship of their Children.

Annie Dosanjh - Associate Lawyer

Annie is a dedicated trial lawyer at Grewal Litigation, specializing in criminal law. She earned her JD with honors from Bond University and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University. Annie has successfully represented clients in both the Provincial and Supreme Courts of British Columbia, where her strong courtroom advocacy and passion for meeting her clients' needs have set her apart.
 
Annie's practice spans a broad spectrum of criminal matters, including drug trafficking, assault, firearms offenses, driving infractions, and sexual assault. She is deeply committed to minimizing the challenges her clients face in the criminal justice system, leveraging her extensive experience to handle each case with precision and care.

Paneet Atwal - Articled Student

Paneet assists in criminal, family law and refugee law matters. She earned her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Victoria before completing her honours GELLB at the City, University of London and her Master in Common Law at the University of British Columbia.

Throughout her academic journey, Paneet actively participated in various legal societies and held leadership roles. She was the President of the Canadian and American Law Society and served on the Student Council.

Paneet is deeply committed to advocating for her clients, guiding them through challenging legal matters with empathy, competence, and diligence. She finds great fulfillment in applying her legal knowledge to positively impact people's lives.

Paneet enjoys exploring local cafés and cherishing moments with her beloved puppy.

Preety Hehar- Articled Student

Preety assists in family, criminal, and refugee law matters. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University and a Juris Doctor from Bond University. Before attending law school, Preety worked as a legal assistant for several years at prominent law firms, where she gained valuable hands-on experience in legal research, drafting court documents, and managing client communications. Her involvement in high-profile cases sharpened her case management skills and reinforced her commitment to a legal career.

Preety has successfully represented clients in both Provincial and Supreme Court. She has worked on a broad range of cases, including assisting refugees seeking asylum, conducting protection order hearings, and participating in trials.

Her dedication to the legal field stems from her passion for advocating on behalf of vulnerable clients and her commitment to ensuring justice and fairness in the legal system. With strong communication skills and keen attention to detail, Preety is a valuable asset to any legal team.

Outside of work, Preety is a foodie who enjoys jogging, hiking, and spending quality time with her niece. She is fluent in Punjabi and Hindi.
